Nigeria’s Super Eagles qualified for Africa
Cup of Nations Cameroon 2021 on Saturday March 27, 2021 with a dramatic last-gasp 1-0 win
away over neighbours Benin
Republic. The three-time champion has already secured their place at
the finals before kick off after
Lesotho and Sierra Leone
drew 0-0 in Group L.
The result in Maseru
guaranteed the Super Eagles a top-two finish in the section ahead of their
top-of-the-table clash away to Benin
in Porto-Novo
later Saturday.
Nigeria has eight points, Benin seven, Sierra
Leone four and Lesotho three.
Benin needs one point from the match against
Nigeria
to also secure a place at the finals of the premier African national team
competition.
The victory for Nigeria
was a blow for their crestfallen hosts and keeps alive the hopes of
third-placed Sierra Leone,
who must beat Benin
at home on Tuesday to finish second in the group.
Nigeria advanced to 11 points, leaving Benin on seven and Sierra Leone with four with one
game each left. Nigeria
is the 17th team to qualify for the 24-team finals.
The last round of qualifiers starts on Sunday and concludes
on Tuesday with the final places to be decided only in Tuesday’s late matches.
Algeria,
Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Comoros, Egypt, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Gambia,
Ghana, Guinea, Ivory Coast, Mali, Morocco, Nigeria, Senegal, Tunisia and
Zimbabwe have qualified, leaving seven places to be filled.
