The US 39th president and Nobel Peace Prize winner, Jimmy Carter died at his home in Plains, Georgia, on Sunday, December 29, 2024, at the age of 100.
The Carter Center said the US 39th
president died in Plains, Georgia, surrounded by his family.
He was 100 and the oldest living US president of all time, surpassing the record held by the late George H.W. Bush in March 2019.
The former peanut farmer lived longer than any president in
history and celebrated his
100th birthday in October.
Born in October 1924, he served as the 76th Governor of Georgia from 1971 – 1975 after serving in the Georgia State Senate from 1963 – 1967 as a member of the Democratic Party and became one-term served President of the United State of America from January 20, 1977 – January 20, 1981, a period beset by economic and diplomatic crises. But he had a brilliant post-presidential career as a champion of health, peace and democracy.
There was, however, a notable foreign policy triumph in the Middle East when he helped broker an accord between Egypt and Israel, signed at Camp David in the US in 1978. He also teamed up with Nelson Mandela to found The Elders, a group of global leaders who committed themselves to work on peace and human rights.
Carter’s beloved wife, Rosalynn, died in November 2023. They had been inseparable during their 77-year marriage, and after she passed away, the former president said in a statement that “as long as Rosalynn was in the world, I always knew somebody loved and supported me.”
The former president attended his wife’s memorial
events, including a private burial and a televised tribute service in
Atlanta, where he was seated in the front row in a reclined wheelchair. He did
not deliver any remarks.
Jimmy Carter stopped medical treatment for an undisclosed illness last year and instead began receiving hospice care at his home.
A lieutenant in the US Navy and a farmer is survived by his
four children, 11 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. May his gentle
soul rest in perfect peace, THE GREAT.
