The Oyo Governor Ajimobi has stated and directed, while
addressing journalists shortly after an inspection visit to the Apete bridge,
that the contractor handling Apete Bridge and the state Ministry of Works must
ensure that a temporary pedestrian bridge is put in place by this weekend while
the main bridge is to be completed by end of 2014.
The Governor said the bridge could not have been
completed earlier than now because of the revision in design coupled with
additional alterations which had extended the completion date.
Governor Ajimobi also used the opportunity to commiserate
with people who might have lost their loved ones during the flooding, and
appealed to members of the public to desist from vandalising contractor’s
property at the site.
Ajimobi decried the situation where some members of the public excavated some quantity of sand from the foot of the bridge under the pretext of assisting the public.
He also cautioned politicians in the state not to politicise the issue of Apete bridge, noting that the problem had been there before the advent of the current administration, saying “it is the desire of the present administration to rehabilitate, expand and modernise the bridge in line with the transformation agenda of the state government.”
While also addressing the press the site engineer, Mr Sarddock Silvanous expressed readiness to complete the bridge in line with the government directives.
