Brig. Gen. Benjamin Adekunle, the Black Scorpion, Dies at 78

The ‘civil war’ veteran, popularly known as the ‘Black Scorpion,’ Brig.-Gen Benjamin Adekunle (rtd.) died on Saturday morning in Lagos at the age of 78, according to his wife, Folake.

Adekunle, an active player in the Nigerian Civil War, who was compulsorily retired from the Nigerian Army in 1974, was the first to lead the famous 3rd Marine Commando during the war between the Nigerian Government and the self-declared Republic of Biafra. The civil war that lasted three year, started in July 1967 and which the military unit eventually spearheaded its end in January 1970.

National Women Summit in Ibadan, Oyo State

The Nigerian First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan, is expected to join other women in Ibadan, Oyo State capital tomorrow for the opening ceremony of the National Women Summit.

This was briefed by the Oyo State First Lady, Mrs Florence Ajimobi, that dignitaries expected to grace the opening ceremony of the summit include Nigerian First Lady, Patience Goodluck Jonathan, alongside the Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Hajia Zainab Maina, wives of the South-West state governors, as well as human rights activist, Dr Joe Odumakin.

Doctors Condemned 22 Sept Schools Resumption, Ebola Should Be Given Time – NMA

Doctors throughout the federation have condemned the Federal Government decision on schools’ resumption date scheduled for 22nd Sept instead of 12th October. The sector through its governing body, the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), said that all schools ought to remain shut till all those under surveillance for the Ebola Virus Disease in the country are certified free of the virus.

IBEDC, Electricity Has Come to Stay in Ibadan

The Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company, IBEDC, has at last restored power supply in Ibadan outskirts as it commissioned the rehabilitated 2X15MVA, 33/11KVA Substation at Akanran Road, Olorunsogo, Ibadan, Oyo State capital.

The rehabilitated sub-station, with two 15MVA injections, distributes power to the local government and other communities from five local government areas in Ibadan.
