The Nigerian First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan, is expected to join
other women in Ibadan, Oyo
State capital tomorrow for the opening ceremony of the National Women Summit.
This was briefed by the Oyo State First Lady, Mrs Florence Ajimobi, that
dignitaries expected to grace the opening ceremony of the summit include
Nigerian First Lady, Patience Goodluck Jonathan, alongside the Minister of Women
Affairs and Social Development, Hajia Zainab Maina, wives of the South-West
state governors, as well as human rights activist, Dr Joe Odumakin.
She further explained that the three-day summit, organised by the Oyo
State Officials Wives’ Association (OYSOWA) aimed at proper raising of girl-child
through symposium titled: “Empowering the girl child: A challenge for all,”
which will focus on ways to stop the victimisation of the girl-child, their
financial freedom, as well as the enforcement of their fundamental right –
noting that in the present age, women have been noted to hold important
position in the country and had helped in lifting the nation towards a greater
height.
Mrs Ajimobi, while enjoining women across the state and beyond to attend
the meeting, said “we have a line of eminent resource persons that will speak
on diverse issues, which will at the end of the summit assist participant to
follow a set guideline to achieve our defined goals in empowering our female
children in every way.”
During the summit at Kakanfo Inn, notable speakers will discuss issues
which border on the girl-child, such as rights of the girl-child; Leadership:
Educating the male child on the importance of female empowerment; Healthy girl,
wealthy nation, among others.
Speakers at the Summit include Mrs Grace Atim of the Institute of Peace
and Conflict Resolution; Mrs Sarah Nyati of UNICEF; Mrs Eugenia Abu, Executive
Director of Programmes, Nigeria Television Authority (NTA), among others.
