The Oyo State House of
Assembly has approved today Tuesday 8 April 2025, the 2025 capital budget
proposals of 33 local government areas in the state.
The approval became
imperative ahead of the proposed financial autonomy for local governments in
the state.
The approval was granted on Tuesday when the report of the House Committee on Local Government, Chieftaincy Matters and State Honours was presented by its Chairman, Hon. Akintunde Emmanuel (Lagelu).
The budget approval was aimed at streamlining expenditures of all the 33 local government areas of the state for probity and accountability to enable them deliver on their mandates.
The committee urged all the
Local governments to adhere to the approved capital expenditures so as to
ensure compliance with the Constitution and Local Governments Law.
Part of the recommendations
of the Committee is for the Oyo State House of Assembly and the Association of
Local Government in Nigeria (ALGON) to organize a workshop on budgeting and
budgetary control for local government chairmen and management staff to enhance
efficiency and service delivery.
The Speaker, Oyo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin said the approval of the local governments’ budget is a significant step towards promoting transparency and accountability in governance.
He said, “As the Chairman,
Conference of Speakers of State Legislatures of Nigeria, this is the narrative
we are pushing across the country in preparation for the proposed financial
autonomy for local governments in Nigeria.”
