Nigeria Super Falcons played goalless draw with their Algeria
counterpart for the ongoing Women African Cup of Nations (WACON) tournament on
Sunday, 13 July, 2025, in Casablanca, Morocco.
Nigeria sets up a quarter-final showdown with Zambia at the
2024 WACON after a 0-0 draw with Algeria
secured the Super Falcons top spot in Group B.
The result in Casablanca also meant the North Africans
progressed to the last eight, where they will face the second-placed finisher
in Group C.
Nigeria is chasing a record-extending 10th WAFCON title and
topped Group B on seven points without conceding a goal.

Super Falcons dominated possession against Algeria and
created far more chances than their opponents, but were frustrated by a compact
and resilient defence which was content to soak up pressure.
The match ended with Nigeria pressing for a late winner, with
Echegini sending a curling effort just wide in the 89th minute.
For Algeria, the draw marked a milestone performance as they
reach the knockout stages at Wafcon finals for the first time.
Their progress has been built on a solid defence, having also
progressed without conceding a goal.

Ghoutia Karchouni's winner against Botswana was their only
goal of the group stage but has proved enough to extend their stay in Morocco
until their quarter-final tie next Saturday.
For Nigeria, the financial rewards could provide crucial
funding for the development of women’s football infrastructure and player
welfare programmes.
Under the newly enhanced prize structure announced by the
Confederation of African Football, each of the four quarter-finalists is
guaranteed at least $200,000. This financial boost underscores CAF’s commitment
to raising the stakes and rewarding performance in women’s football across
Africa.
Should the Super Falcons progress beyond the quarter-finals
but fall short of the final, they stand to earn an additional $150,000 as
semi-finalists who finish third. However, if they reach the final and end as
runners-up, their prize money will increase significantly to $500,000.

Nigeria, however, has its sights firmly set on the ultimate
prize. Victory in the final would see the nine-time champions take home a
record-breaking $1million—a testament to their ambition and status as Africa’s
most successful women’s national team.
Nigeria will face Zambia for the quarter-finals’ game for the
ongoing WAFCON while Algeria on the other hand will play the team that finishes
second in group C.
