Nigeria’s First Elected Female Governor Emerges from Taraba State

It was amazed when Dame Virginia Ngozi Etiaba, an Nnewi, became the Governor of Anambra State in South-central Nigeria, from 2 November 2006 to 13 June 2007. She was the first female governor in Nigeria's history. Her instatement came as the previous governor, Peter Obi, was impeached by the state legislature for alleged gross misconduct. She transferred her powers back to Obi six months later when an appeal court nullified the impeachment.
It is rather a jubilation this time as Senator Aisha Jummai Al-Hassan made it to the Governor’s house in Taraba State.
A Mumuye has made history by becoming the first Nigerian woman to be elected a State Governor. Taraba State report said Jummai, the first female governorship candidate from the entire Northern part of the country, won April 11th gubernatorial election. She ran vigorously on the platform of the All Progressive Congress (APC).
Senator Jummai was elected Senator for the Taraba North constituency of Taraba State, Nigeria in
the April 2011 Federal elections. She ran on the People's Democratic Party (PDP) platform. She later defected to the main opposition party All Progressive Congress (APC) and given mandate of Gubernatorial Candidate of Taraba State. She is currently governor-elect as of 11th of April 2015 for Taraba state. She is now the first ever female elected governor in the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
Though INEC is yet to officially announce her winner, Nigerians are already celebrating Aisha Jummai Al-Hassan’s feat on social media.
Aisha Jummai is a Mumuye and a lawyer by training. She is a serving senator and former Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice of Taraba State. Senator Jummai was appointed the Chief Registrar of the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja. After she retired from service she went into business later returned to full politics and prospered to the Governor’s house of Taraba State of Nigeria.
