George Weah Wins Liberia’s Presidential Election

Former world’s best footballer and presidential candidate of Congress for Democratic Change (CDC), George Weah, has won the Liberian presidential election after securing over 61.5 per cent of the vote, against his major opponent, Vice President Joseph Boakai.
The country’s electoral commission announcing the result on Thursday 28th December, 2017, said Weah had taken 61.5 per cent of the vote from 98.1 percent of ballots cast, to defeat Vice President Joseph Boakai, who took 38.5 per cent of the vote.
With his election victory, Weah will succeed Ellen Johnson Sirleaf to become president next month, the country’s first democratic transition since 1944.

Olubadan’s Wife, Olori Kudirat, Passes On at the Age of 71

The senior wife of the Olubadan of Ibadan land, Olori Kudirat Adetunji, died early in the morning of 21st December, 2017. She got married to Oba Saliu Adetunji 53 years ago and passes away on Thursday morning at the age of 71.
The Oyo State Governor Isiaka Ajimobi commiserated the majesty King Saliu Adetunji through a statement by his Special Adviser on Communication and Strategy, Mr Yomi Layinka, describing the demise of Olori Kudirat as unfortunate and disheartening.

The Governor expressed shock and disbelief at the passing away of Olori Adetunji and described Olori’s death as a big loss to the Olubadan and the entire indigenes of Ibadan.

Russia 2018 World Cup Draw

The 2018 World Cup draw took place on Friday, 1 December, 2017, at the Kremlin, which seemed as good as any place to unveil valuable information of vital global interest.

The Super Eagles of Nigeria, as well as 31 other countries, were part of the draw that revealed the group opponents of the participating teams.

Gary Lineker, who played in the 1986 and 1990 finals for England and scored in both competitions, conducted the draw alongside Russian star, Maria Komandnaya.
Nigeria is in Pot 4, alongside Serbia, Australia, Japan, Morocco, Panama, Korea Republic, and Saudi Arabia.

Mnangagwa Sworn in as Zimbabwe’s President

Emmerson Mnangagwa was sworn in as president of Zimbabwe on Friday 24th November, 2017 at a ceremony that was the culmination of an extraordinary 10 days that ended Robert Mugabe’s 37-year rule. Mr Mnangagwa praised the 93-year-old former leader as his “father” and “mentor,” but also alluded to the malaise he is inheriting with the country plagued by political instability and an economy on the brink of collapse. “Never again should the circumstances that have put Zimbabwe in an insufferable position be allowed to occur,” he said, adding that his government “must hit the ground running”. Mnangagwa said he was committed to holding democratic elections next year.

Nigeria and Ex-Everton and Middlesbrough Striker, Yakubu, Hangs Up Boot

Former Nigeria international striker, Yakubu Ayegbeni, retired from football at the age of 35. Yakubu Aiyegbeni was born in Benin City, Edo State. A powerful central striker, he started his career with Julius Berger FC in Lagos 1997 as a teenager in the Nigerian Premier League. He was later loaned to Portuguese club Gil Vicente, Maccabi Haifa (Israel), then to Portsmouth (England).
In almost a decade in English football, between January 2003 and June 2012, Yakubu scored 114 times in 293 league appearances, mostly in the top flight.
He averaged nearly a goal every other game at Portsmouth, Middlesbrough, Everton, Leicester and Blackburn before joining Chinese club Guangzhou.

Robert Mugabe Finally Resigns As Zimbabwe’s President

The 93-year-old Robert Mugabe finally resigned as Zimbabwe’s president, on Tuesday 21st November, 2017 bringing to an end 37 years in power which he began as a hero of the struggle against white rule and ended as the man blamed for reducing his country to despotism and economic misery. 
"My decision to resign is voluntary on my part and arises from my concern for the welfare of the people of Zimbabwe and my desire for a smooth, non-violent transfer of power," Mr Mugabe said in a letter read out by Jacob Mudenda, the speaker of parliament.

Alagba Adebayo Faleti Passes On

The Yoruba Icon, poet, journalist, Actor and writer, Alagba Adebayo Faleti died in his home at Orogun area, Ibadan on Sunday 23rd July, 2017. Recollecting last moment before his death, his son, Adeniyi Faleti, said Alagba died after premonition talks held between him and relatives surrounded him including Adeniyi; he took pap and bath upon his request and went to his ancestors.  
Alagba Faleti died at age of 86.  Adebayo Faleti was born in Agbo-Oye, Oyo State, on 26th December, 1930, though lived in Obananko, Kuranga, near Oyo State. He is the first son of his father, Joseph Akanbi Faleti and the only child of his mother, Durowade Ayinke Faleti.
From an early age Alagba Faleti always had a passion for drama. He was also known as a Yoruba translator, a broadcaster, TV exponent and a pioneer of the first television station in Africa, Western Nigeria Television (WNTV).

Another Nigerian Awarded World Prize Laureate in 2017

At a ceremony held at the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Washington, D.C on Monday 26th June, 2017, another Nigerian, Dr Akinwumi Adesina, was named the 2017 World Food Prize Laureate after the renowned Professor Wole Soyinka, who won Nobel Laureate in Literature in 1986.
The incumbent President of African Development Bank (AfDB) was selected to become the 46th recipient and the 6th African to be honoured with the award.
Adesina was the Nigeria Minister of Agriculture under the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan.

The body of actress Moji Olaiya, arrived Nigeria early yesterday 6 June, 2017. Her body which was brought in from Canada where she died, arrived the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos and was received by her family members and some friends.

A Nigerian Varsity Launches A Cubesat Into U.S. Space

A Nigerian varsity launched a Cubesat codenamed NigeriaEdusat-1, into space from the Kennedy Space Centre in Florida, United States. The Nigerian CubeSat is designed, built and owned by the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA).
The Nigerian Cubesat is a component of the Birds 1 satellites, comprising of four other CubeSats belonging to Japan, Ghana, Mongolia and Bangladesh. They were launched from the SpaceX Falcon9 Rocket.

Nigeria Schools Ready to Teach Math, Science Subjects in Local Languages

The Federal Government says primary and secondary schools in the country will soon start teaching Mathematics and Science subjects in indigenous languages. The Minister of Science and Technology, Dr Ogbonnaya Onu, revealed this at the inauguration of the inter-ministerial committee in the teaching of Mathematics and Science subjects in Local languages in Abuja on 31 May, 2017.
The inter-ministerial committee involved Federal Ministry of Science and Technology and Ministry of Education. He said the inter-ministerial committee would help to develop the capacity of the local languages to serve as effective tools for teaching mathematics and science subjects.

First Osun State Governor SERUBANWON Dies @ 62

The first Osun State Governor – after the partition of old Oyo State – Governor Isiaka Adeleke SERUBAWON dies on Sunday 23rd April, 2017. He is a senator in the current 8th Assembly, and a three term senator representing Osun West senatorial district, Isiaka Adeleke was confirmed dead.
Sen. Adeleke died at the age of 62 at Bikets Hospital in Osogbo, the Osun state capital after suffering a heart attack according to family sources.
His death has been confirmed by the All Progressives Congress (APC) through its twitter handle: @APCNigeria

Nollywood Actor Olumide Bakare Passes On

Nollywood popular actor, Olumide Bakare, is dead. He died in the early hours of Saturday 21st April, 2017, according to his personal assistant, who was with him when he passed away.
Information gathered confirmed that Olumide Bakare, who has been sick for more than a year was discharged from the University College Hospital (UCH) last year after he was allegedly diagnosed with a respiratory disorder problem.
It was gathered that the actor was yet to fully recover from the sickness that kept him indoors for months.

Naira Strengthened Further Against Dollar

The Naira on Thursday strengthened against the dollar in all the major segments of the market, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports.
At the parallel market, the Nigerian currency gained five points to exchange at N385 to the Dollar from the N390 recorded on Wednesday.
The Pound Sterling and the Euro traded at N495 and N410, respectively.
At the Bureau De Change (BDC) segment, the Naira closed at N362 to the dollar, while the Pound Sterling and the Euro exchanged at N490 and N424, respectively.

Brilliant Nigerian Girl Olawunmi Akinlemibola Gets 14 Admissions

A talented high school student in Prince George’s County has a big decision to make soon –– she was accepted to 14 colleges and universities, including Harvard, Princeton and Stanford.
Olawunmi Akinlemibola, a senior at DuVal High School in Lanham, Maryland, was accepted to Ivy League schools, the University of Maryland and several other institutions.

The 18-year-old has a 4.15 GPA and already has earned college credit. She works hard for her success, her guidance counselor, Stacy Kline, said. “I’m just amazed by her,” she said. “It’s the internal drive that she has.”

Nigeria’s Young Scientist of the Year Oluwatosin Adedipe

16-year-old Adedipe Oluwatosin was named Young Scientist of the Year on 4th April, 2017, after winning the Young Nigerian Scientist Presidential Award at a ceremony held at Eagle’s Square, Abuja.
Adedipe emerged best at a competition organised by the Federal Ministry of Science and Technology, out of a total of 774 candidates (drawn from all the local government areas in the country) who participated both at the preliminary and the final stages.
