Globacom,
the leading corporate sponsor of football in Nigeria, has on Saturday called on
the Nigeria’s Under-17 Women football team, the Flamingoes to go all out and
bring the Female U-17 World Cup trophy to Nigeria as the U-17 World Cup tournament
formally kicks-off in Costa Rica.
The Flamingoes will start their World Cup campaign on Sunday against China in Group D in Alajuela.
A
statement from Globacom in Lagos on Thursday said the Flamingoes have all it
takes to surmount the challenges posed by their group opponents.
“The
preparation by the Nigerian junior team ahead of this competition has been
impressive and we believe the team has all it takes to excel,” the statement
remarked.
According
to Globacom, “it is imperative to go for victory in this first encounter so as
to gain good points and confidence ahead of the remaining group matches against
Colombia and Mexico.”
The
company said it’s very optimistic that the girls would fly higher, particularly
if they build on the team spirit and the technical guidance they have received
under the tutelage of Coach Bala Nikyu.
“It
is also our belief that the Flamingoes are aware of the expectations of
Nigerians who are still basking in the euphoria of the recent success achieved
by the U-17 team, Golden Eaglets who won the U-17 World trophy in Dubai. The
Eaglets’ success should be a motivating factor for the team,” the statement
said.
The
Flamingoes have been camping, training and acclimatizing in Faro, Portugal
ahead of the FIFA U-17 World Cup scheduled to hold in Costa Rica between 15th
March and 4th April, 2014.
Globacom is the major partner of the Nigeria
Football Federation and official sponsor of the Nigerian national teams.
