Absolutely, I Believe in Love No Matter What! - Bimbo Thomas

Nollywood actress, Bimbo Thomas, in an interview with Tribune opens up about her lifestyle, favies, controversies and acting-related issues. Excerpts:

What projects have you been up to lately?
I’ve been on several projects – from movies to soaps, TV commercials and so on; but I’m basically working on my personal project at the moment. I’m yet to conclude my script. As soon as the script is ready, plans for shooting commence immediately, by the Grace of God.

People think you only feature in wild movies, especially as a street girl. Why is this so?
Well, like you said, “they think.” People have the right to their thoughts, but I can tell you categorically that I have only done two or three films that involve violence. These films were widely accepted and my fans appreciate it, as though I haven’t done any other movie. I’ve said this before and I will say it again: I’m not wild or tough in anyway. I’m a sweet and loving lady; very interesting and fun to be with. Whatever you see on the screen is me acting the script as instructed by my director.

So which would you describe as your most emotional movie?
My most emotional film is Awa Obinrin by Funke Akindele. I played the role of a housewife.

What’s your typical day like?
Not much. If I’m not working, then I’m home, enjoying a drink, watching movies or playing my addictive games like Candy crush and Temple Run. Then I end up surfing the web right in my room, where the comfort feels so good.

How often do you change your hair?
Within a week or two, and that’s the maximum. After that, I’m out with a new look.

What’s your favourite hairdo?
Any convenient hairdo is cool for me; mostly short hair that I can play around it.

How fashionable are you?
I think I’m more of a stylish person than a fashionable lady; but I respond to fashion as though I own it.

You have a great shape. What do you do to maintain it?
I’d say a very big thank you for that compliment. Talking about what I do to my body to keep it in shape, well, I believe I feed well. I eat fresh fruits and more of vegetables. I can’t say I exercise daily, but I make sure I do slight aerobics like movement within the house, or dancing or just walking within the house to sweat out. Lastly, I completely stopped eating at night so as not to go out of shape.

When you are down, what do you do to get back up?
Being down could come in different ways; it could be health-wise or emotionally. If I break down due to stress/work load or I have a feverish feeling, I just try and slow down and take adequate rest or I just see my doctor, if need be. As for emotional breakdown, I come out of it by running the situation by myself – yes, I talk a lot to myself and I resolve it within me.

What are your favourite beauty products?
I use Mac products. In fact, I love them so much. I also like Black Opal, Mary Kay, Iman Powder, N0 7, Smash Box and Sefora.

What would you describe as your unique selling point?
Hmm.... I think it’s my carriage.

What are the downsides of being an actress?
For me, I’d say it’s the inability to exercise one’s freedom; living your life for public criticism, and also safeguarding the duty of a good ‘role model’.

What’s your favourite look on a typical day?
A pair of jeans and a nice top on flat shoes and my frames, with my handbag. I’m good to go.

What has been your most embarrassing moment ever?
I have had several of them. If I must be sincere, this very one happened at the mall in Ikeja. Some ladies bumped into me and I could read the shock in them as they were not sure if it was me they were seeing. So I paced up like I wasn’t aware of the confusion, at the same time avoiding any sort of drama. To my greatest surprise, loud and clear, I just heard someone scream my stage name ‘Nikky!’. Right there, I felt like vanishing, because it was so loud and the noise drew people’s attention to me. And before I could say anything, question and answer section started. We took several minutes taking pictures before I was allowed to leave. It was so stressful that my jaw ached.

You once said your boobs were fresher than Cossy’s. What was that about?
I’m still stunned as we speak as to how that statement came about, because I never said a thing close to that to any media house or person. Why do I have to run anybody down? What for? I’m in no competition with anybody. Wherever that was culled out from only God knows, but definitely not from me.

You also said you would not date again after you discovered that the man you were dating at some point was married. Have you changed your mind?
Oh did I? I doubt if that was what I said, because however withdrawn one might be, love is a beautiful piece designed by God. And I believe in love always because it’s a good thing to love and be loved. So, I will love and hope to be loved over again.

With all the heartaches and heartbreaks, do you regret being an actress sometimes?
Not at all. I only try to enjoy love in what I do, even more so as to overcome and ignore the negative thoughts.

So, are you going to try your hands on love again?
Absolutely! I believe in (love), no matter what.

Who are your favourite designers?
Christian Louboutin, Giuseppe Zanotti shoes; Alexander McQueen, Massimo Dutti shirts; Tiffany Amber and Vvonne Couture.

Who is your celebrity crush?
Ghanian actor, John Dumelo and Idris Elba – if I’m permitted to mention two.

How far can you go for a movie role?
The only thing I can do is prove myself beyond every reasonable doubt.

I mean how much of your skin can you bare for a movie role?
It depends...

Do you think Nigerian men are romantic or just dictators?
Well, they used to be dictators but things are changing and people are getting clearer view on how things should be done. Quality information is being paid attention to and our men are becoming more romantic by the day, imbibing the Western way of life.

Can you recall your first movie role?
Yes, I was a police detective.

What’s your educational background?
I’m a degree holder; a graduate of Creative Arts from the University of Lagos.

How was growing up like for you?
It was sweet and bitter; it’s a mixed treatment, though interesting.

What are your plans for the future?
I want to be a good wife, mother and be fulfilled in my career.
