Ajimobi Declares Charging Fees In Schools Illegal for the Head Teachers

Heads of government-owned primary and secondary schools have been warned by the Oyo State Governor Abiola Ajimobi to stop charging illegal fees under any guise or in any form. He spoke this, while hosting the executive of the All Nigeria Confederation of Principals of Secondary Schools (ANCOPSS) in his office in Ibadan, the state capital.

While he was restating the free education policy of his administration in primary and secondary schools, Ajimobi warned school heads against charging illegal fees. He said: “I found out that some teachers charge pupils underground fees and I want this to stop.” Urging teachers to put in their best to produce pupils, who will be outstanding in learning and character, the governor said with about 30 per cent allocated to education in the 2014 budget, more funds would be available to transform the sector. ANCOPSS State President Mrs. Funmilayo Ojoawo hailed the administration’s education policy.

She said: “We appreciate the fact that the provision of free and quality education has become a huge investment. Tuition is free and the government has employed highly qualified teachers in our schools. This is highly commendable.” Mrs. Ojoawo lauded the prevailing peace in the state, which she said contributed immensely to the successes recorded by the Ajimobi administration.

She said: “We thank God for the peace in Oyo State. It is a welcome development and we believe the Oyo of yesteryears, which was known for hooliganism of the highest degree, has now known peace. This is a major prerequisite for meaningful development. Whatever magic wand God has entrusted to our governor to bring peace to Oyo State is highly appreciated.”

Mrs. Ojoawo urged the government to promote secondary school teachers, who had been on Grade Level 16 for years, to Grade Level 17, and requested that head teachers be considered to fill the vacant seats of permanent secretaries in the State Teaching Service Commission.
