The electoral body of the federation, the Independent National Electoral
Commission (INEC) has been advised to step up actions that will help it overcome
challenges of current slow-down in the voters’ registration in Kwara State.
In a statement signed by Kayode Oyin-Zubair, Co-ordinator, Kwara Change
Initiative in Ilorin, on Thursday, the group observed that the process could be
better if the commission moves to fix some of the challenges that are currently
being encountered.
“In our random observation in some local government areas within the state and going down the ward level, we observed that the challenges the INEC officials and would-be voters are faced with are rather technical problems. In some of the wards, the data capturing machines could not be powered as the battery is either uncharged or faulty. This is understandable as some of the machines were last used in 2011; when such an exercise was last conducted.
“It is also necessary for the commission to increase the number of
machines deployed to centre opened in each ward.”
We
noticed that registration centres are only opened at the ward collation centre
with just one data capturing machine. This is just inadequate, to say the least
going by the number of days available for the exercise and large turnout of
people in many of the centres.”
