Nigeria Falconets Thrash Korea DPR 6-2 to Meet Germany in Final

With a tendency to score quick goals during their time at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup Canada 2014, Nigeria did create a comfortable mood for its supporters and Courtney Dike continued that trend with a goal barely more than a minute after kick-off before Asisat Oshoala added four goals en route to the Super Falconets’ stunning 6-2 semi-final win against Korea DPR in Moncton, Canada.

The win sends Peter Dedevbo’s side into the final in Montreal on Sunday, while Korea DPR will also make the trip west to compete in the play-off for third place. The North Koreans managed to keep the match within reach throughout the first half, despite Dike’s early strike, before the Nigerians ran away with the result in the second period.

Germany have also set up a FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup final against Nigeria after eking out a 2-1 win over an excellent France in Montreal.

The outcome was harsh on Bleuettes who dominated much of this excellent, enthralling last-four encounter, but were ultimately punished for failing to convert a string of superb chances.

France pushed hard for an equalizer in the final minutes but it was to no avail and they must now face up to a third-place play-off against Korea DPR on Sunday, 24 August at Olympic stadium, Montreal at 1600hrs local time, while Germany compete for gold with Nigeria at the same stadium at 1900hrs local time.

Meanwhile, President Goodluck Jonathan on Thursday congratulated Nigeria’s Under-20 women’s football team, the Falconets on their qualification for the final match of the ongoing FIFA World Cup in Canada.

In a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Dr. Reuben Abati, the President applauded the Falconets’ scintillating display which earned them a 6-2 victory in Wednesday’s semi-final encounter with North Korea as well as their very commendable performance in earlier matches.

As the Falconets prepare for the final match of the tournament against Germany on Sunday, Jonathan urged them to put in their best effort to win the U-20 World Cup for Nigeria and Africa for the first time in the history of the competition.

He assured the girls and their handlers of the full support of the Federal Government and the prayers of all Nigerians for their triumph on Sunday.
